Bottlenose dolphins in Denmark and beyond

Bottlenose dolphins

On Thursday, 16 October at 7 p.m., you can hear the exciting lecture ‘Bottlenose dolphins in Denmark and beyond’ when Olga Filatova visits the aquarium.

Bottlenose dolphins – highly intelligent, social and charismatic marine mammals – are now being seen with increasing frequency along Denmark's coasts. But why are they here?

This lecture delves into the fascinating world of bottlenose dolphin biology and behaviour and explores how these animals live, communicate, socialise and sometimes clash with other species. Based on new observations from Danish waters, we will examine how dolphins' behaviour reflects their complex intelligence – from cooperative hunting and social play to unexpected aggression towards porpoises. We will also discuss interactions between dolphins and humans, including the risks that arise when curious dolphins approach swimmers or boats.

Whether you are an enthusiast of marine life or simply curious about why dolphins appear off the Danish coast, this lecture provides an engaging insight into the life of one of the ocean's most fascinating animals.

Olga FilatovaOlga Filatova is employed at the University of Southern Denmark, Department of Biology, and has studied whales and dolphins for 25 years. She began her career researching acoustic communication and dialects in killer whales and later expanded her work to include ecology, behaviour and genetics in several species, including humpback whales and beaked whales. In 2022, she moved to Denmark, where she now leads a project investigating the dynamics of porpoises migrating into Danish waters.

The lecture will be held in English.
